Overview
Melodex is a mobile application for musicians to capture audio ideas, build chord progressions, write notes, and organize their creative work. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
Melodex is designed with a privacy-first approach. All core features work fully offline. An optional account enables cloud backup and sync, which requires transmitting your data to our servers — that process is described in detail below.
Data We Collect
We collect only what is necessary for the app to function and for you to use optional cloud features:
- Content you create: Audio recordings, chord progressions, fretboard diagrams, notes, tags (key, genre, feel, instrument), and idea names.
- Account information (optional): Your email address and a hashed password if you choose to create an account.
- Speech transcriptions (optional): When you enable "Transcribe speech to text", the audio from that recording is sent to a transcription service and the resulting text is saved as a note. The audio is not retained by the transcription service beyond the duration of the request.
- Export request metadata (optional): When you use the Audio Export feature, your email address (from your account) is used to deliver the download link. No additional data is collected.
- Crash and error reports (Sentry): If the app crashes or encounters an error, diagnostic information including the error type, stack trace, device model, OS version, and app version is automatically sent to Sentry. This data does not include your recordings, notes, or any content you create.
- Usage analytics (Vexo): Anonymised analytics data — such as which screens are visited and which features are used — is collected to help us understand how the app is used and where to improve. This data does not identify you personally.
We do not collect location data, contacts, or advertising identifiers.
App Permissions
Melodex requests the following system permissions:
- Microphone: Required to record audio. The microphone is only active when you explicitly start a recording.
- Storage / Media Library: Required to save, read, and manage audio files on your device. On Android, this includes read/write access to the app's designated media directory.
These permissions are used solely to provide the core recording and playback functionality. Melodex does not use the microphone in the background or access your existing media library beyond what you explicitly import.
Local Storage
By default, all data — recordings, chord progressions, notes, tags, and idea metadata — is stored locally on your device. Nothing is transmitted to external servers without your action.
Local data is stored in the app's private sandbox and is not accessible to other apps. Uninstalling Melodex will remove all locally stored data from your device.
Optional Accounts & Cloud Backup
Creating an account is entirely optional. All features except cloud backup, cross-device sync, speech transcription, and audio export work without an account.
If you create an account:
- Your ideas, chord progressions, notes, and tags are backed up to our cloud database (Supabase), which is hosted on secure, encrypted infrastructure.
- Audio recordings are uploaded to secure cloud storage and associated with your account.
- Your data is synced across any device where you sign in to Melodex.
- When you sign out or delete your account, your cloud data is merged back to local storage or permanently deleted respectively (see Deletion below).
Cloud data is used solely for backup, restoration, and sync. We do not analyze, process, or use your content for any other purpose.
Speech-to-Text Transcription
Melodex offers an optional "Transcribe speech to text" feature. When enabled before a recording session:
- The audio from that recording is sent to a third-party transcription API over a secure HTTPS connection.
- The transcription service processes the audio and returns a text transcript.
- The transcript is saved as a note on your idea.
- The audio file is not retained by the transcription service after the request is complete.
This feature requires an account and an active internet connection. It is opt-in per recording — it is never enabled by default.
Audio Export
The Audio Export feature allows you to package and download all audio recordings associated with an idea. When you trigger an export:
- Any unsynced recordings are uploaded to cloud storage.
- Our server packages the recordings into a downloadable archive.
- A time-limited download link is sent to your account email address.
The download link expires after a short period. We do not store your packaged export indefinitely — it is deleted from our servers after delivery. This feature requires an account.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal information or content with third parties for commercial purposes.
We use the following third-party services to operate Melodex:
- Supabase: Cloud database and file storage for account data and backups. Data is stored on servers in the United States. See Supabase's Privacy Policy.
- Sentry: Error and crash reporting. Receives diagnostic data (device model, OS version, stack traces) when the app encounters an error. No user content is included. See Sentry's Privacy Policy.
- Vexo: Product analytics. Receives anonymised usage data (screen views, feature interactions) to help us improve the app. No personally identifiable information or user content is shared. See Vexo's Privacy Policy.
- Speech transcription provider: Used solely to process audio when you opt in to the transcription feature.
These services are bound by their own privacy policies and are used only to fulfil their specific function within the app. We do not share data across these services or combine data from them for any secondary purpose.
We may disclose data if required by law or to protect the safety of our users, but we will limit such disclosure to what is legally required.
Data Retention
Local data remains on your device until you delete it manually or uninstall the app.
Cloud data (for account holders) is retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all cloud data — including your email address, idea metadata, notes, chord progressions, tags, and uploaded audio files — is permanently deleted within 7 days.
Speech transcription audio is not retained by the transcription service beyond the duration of the API request. Transcripts saved as notes are retained as part of your account data and deleted with your account.
Data Deletion
You may delete your account and all associated cloud data at any time:
- Open Melodex → Settings → Delete Account
- Or email us at info@melodexapp.com to request deletion.
Account deletion removes your email address, all synced idea data, and all uploaded audio files from our servers within 7 days. Local data on your device must be removed by uninstalling the app.
Children's Privacy
Melodex is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
